So what’s so amazing about Sea Jellies?
Sea Jellies or jellyfish have been around for at least five hundred million years, yes 500,000,000 years! They are older than the ill-fated dinosaurs and the oldest multi organ animal that we know of. Jellies know a thing or two about living in a world of volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity (VUCA).
The most familiar types of sea jellies have bell-shaped bodies and tentacles. You may know them as “jellyfish,” but the right term is jellies as they are not actually fish. They are instead classed in a group of their own as they are unlike any other animal on Earth.
The body of the jellyfish is made up of a non-living jelly-like substance called mesoglea. This jelly is surrounded by a layer of skin that is just one cell thick.
A jellyfish has no ears or eyes or nose and no brain or heart! They do not even have a head! Their body is almost totally made of water and is soft having no bones at all. Their skin is so thin that they can absorb oxygen right through it, so they don’t need lungs. They respond to the changes in their environment around them using signals from a nerve net just below their epidermis – the outer layer of skin.
One of the defining characteristics of jellies is that they all sting. Jellies protect themselves from predators with the shocking, stinging cells, nematocysts, on their tentacles. Even though some jellyfish have very long tentacles, they never get tangled up or sting themselves!
If you cut a jellyfish in half, the pieces of the jellyfish can regenerate and turn into two new jellies. Scientists have also discovered a jellie which can live forever. Turritopsis dohrniiis now officially known as the only immortal creature. … they don’t die but transform themselves back into their juvenile polyp state.
Jellies live in every ocean and at every depth. They can live in warm, shallow water as well as the deepest, darkest, coldest water
Some jellies have a sting so powerful it can kill a person
Jellies come in all sizes, from teeny tiny to truly enormous. In fact, the Lionsmane jelly can grow to be 6-8 feet in diameter and 70 feet long (bigger than a humpback whale!).
The biggest predator to jellies is other jellies. Most of these cannibalistic creatures eat other species of jelly and leave their own alone.
So what can we learn from jellies?
These incredible animals survive totally from ‘gut’ instinct alone. They are incredibly resilient and adaptable.
We have an incredible Gut Brain too, ever heard the phrase ‘trust your gut’. Scientists have not only proven we have a Gut Brain but we also now know what it does and how to more effectively listen to and communicate with our guts.
We, however, have two distinct advantages over Jellies as we not only have an incredible Gut Brain, designed to protect us, enable us to take courageous action and is fundamentally part of our own core identity (who we deeply are).
We unlike Jellies, also have a phenomenally creative Head Brain to help us making meaning and really develop amazingly solutions; as well as a truly compassionate Heart Brain, with it’s magnetism communicating, connecting and loving.
So how to be even better than a deeply resilient and adaptable jellie?
Allow yourself to really imagine, truly feel and deeply sense within yourself what it would be like to be able to connect, listen to and communicate with your multiple brains to make really, truly and deeply aligned ‘wiser’ decisions about your life, business, relationship etc.
Imagine if like a jellie you could just split in half and create a second version of yourself? What would the best versionof yourself look like?
Now go further, imagine, if you could easily learn to communicate with and align your multiple brains/intelligences to make wiser decisions and liberate the best version of yourself, your loved one’s, clients, pupils, patients etc.
